Clervaux

White-castle town deep in the northern Ardennes — Family of Man photo exhibition, forest hikes, and easy Belgian border access.

Clervaux sits deep in a wooded valley in the far north, 60km from the capital and close to the Belgian border. The white 12th-century castle in the middle of town houses The Family of Man photography exhibition (UNESCO Memory of the World, €7) — 503 Edward Steichen photographs from 68 countries assembled for MoMA in 1955 and permanently reinstalled here. The town itself is small, ringed by steep forested hills, with the Benedictine abbey of St Maurice visible on the ridge above.

By 9pm Clervaux is properly quiet — this is remote Ardennes, and the whole town has maybe 6 restaurants. Choose it for the Family of Man, deep-forest walks, and the atmospheric castle setting. Trains from Luxembourg City take an hour but are direct and free. Rooms €82-€139. Skip if you want busy tourism or fast connections. The Belgian border at Weiswampach is 15 minutes by car — useful for cheap fuel and Belgian beer runs.

The castle itself was almost destroyed during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944, when Clervaux sat directly in the German advance; the rebuilt structure now houses three separate museums under one roof, and a scattering of memorial plaques around town rewards a slow read if military history interests you. Grand-Rue below the castle carries a handful of shops, a bakery, and the tourist office, most shut by 6pm outside peak summer weekends. The Woltz family, longtime owners of the castle, sold it to the state in the 1980s.

Clervaux suits walkers, photography enthusiasts, and anyone wanting a genuinely rural night after Luxembourg City's pace — it is not a base for shopping or nightlife, and the nearest cinema is in Wiltz, 20 minutes away by car. Families with small children do fine on the flat riverside paths, but teenagers wanting Wi-Fi cafés and late shops will be bored by 8pm. July and August bring coach parties for the Family of Man; visit April, May, September or October for quieter galleries and cooler forest walking. Winter is atmospheric but grey, and several restaurants close for weeks.

Where to stay in Clervaux

Half a dozen hotels around Grand-Rue and Rue de la Gare. Expect €82-€139, with the higher end in May-September and rooms dropping toward €82-€95 in November-March when several places also close for a few weeks. The best options are the small family-run hotels on Grand-Rue with castle views, directly across from the château gates, or the abbey guesthouse for something genuinely quiet. Avoid rooms on the N18 through-road, where trucks run early and the outlook is a car park rather than the valley. Half-board is common and often good value given the limited dining options. Weekend rooms in July and August sell out weeks ahead, so book the Grand-Rue castle-view rooms directly and early rather than relying on last-minute availability.

Getting around & the essentials

Castle, abbey and viewpoint circuit

From the station, walk up Grand-Rue past the domed parish church to the castle, then climb Rue de l'Abbaye to the Benedictine abbey with its ridge viewpoint over the town. Descend via the forest path on the opposite side, cross back over the Clerve river, and follow the valley path past the campsite back to the station. About 90 minutes with the climb, longer if you stop at the viewpoint benches.

Direct trains from Luxembourg Gare Centrale to Clervaux run every 30 minutes, take 60 minutes, are free. From Ettelbruck the same train takes 30 minutes. Onward to Troisvierges and the Belgian border. From Findel Airport, allow 90 minutes with the bus 16 to Gare transfer, then the train north. Regional buses connect Clervaux to surrounding Ardennes villages and across the border to Weiswampach and beyond, though services thin out on Sundays. A car helps for exploring the wider Ardennes and the Belgian border hop, but the town itself, castle, abbey and station are all within a 15-minute walk of each other.
