Around the central station — cheapest hotels in the city, plenty of restaurants, and an edgier feel than the old town.

Gare is the district around the central station, south of the Pétrusse gorge, and it's where you’ll find the cheapest sleeps in Luxembourg City — decent doubles from €74-€104 midweek. Avenue de la Liberté runs straight and grand from the station up to the Passerelle bridge, lined with banks and the Postal Museum. The side streets — Rue Joseph Junck, Rue de Strasbourg, Rue de Bonnevoie — have the honest cheap eats: Portuguese, Turkish, Ethiopian, Vietnamese, all under €16 a main.

The reputation is that it's 'sketchy'. Reality: some blocks around Rue Joseph Junck have visible drug use and sex work, especially after dark, but violent incidents are rare. Walk with intent, don’t gawk, and you’re fine. Skip Gare if you’re travelling with kids and easily unsettled; choose it if you want budget, good ethnic food, and a two-minute tram to the old town.

By 9pm the station forecourt empties out fast, but Avenue de la Liberté and Place de Paris keep a steady hum of terrace drinkers until midnight, especially in summer. The Vietnamese and Turkish grills on Rue de Strasbourg stay lit past 10pm, so there is always somewhere to eat if you are arriving on a late train from Brussels or Metz. Solo travellers and budget-conscious couples do well here; families with young children or anyone wanting a quiet old-town postcard view should book Ville Haute instead and treat Gare as a cheaper base a ten-minute tram ride away.

High season, roughly May to September and again in December, pushes Gare's doubles up to around €130-150 a night; low season, expect the quoted €74-€104 to hold or drop further midweek in January and February. The area rewards travellers who value proximity to the platforms over polish — rooms here are smaller and plainer than equivalent prices in Ville Haute, but you're never more than a five-minute walk from a train, tram or bus. Bring earplugs if you're booking anything facing Avenue de la Liberté or the station square itself.

Where to stay in Gare

Best value is on Avenue de la Liberté (Novotel, Ibis Styles, Grand Hotel Cravat outposts) at €82-€121. Rue du Fort Neipperg and Boulevard de la Pétrusse are quieter and still walkable. Avoid Rue Joseph Junck and the block west of Rue de Strasbourg after 10pm for peace of mind. Anything within 200m of the station itself will have some noise; ask for a courtyard-facing room. Weekends are cheaper than midweek across the board. In high season, avenue-facing rooms sell out by early evening, so book at least two weeks ahead if you want the cheaper midweek rate; in low season, walk-in doubles are often available same-day. For the quietest night with still a five-minute walk to the platforms, aim for Rue du Fort Neipperg first, then Boulevard de la Pétrusse, and book there before the Avenue de la Liberté rooms go.

Getting around & the essentials

Gare to Old Town via Pétrusse

From Gare Centrale, walk up Avenue de la Liberté to the Rousegärtchen roundabout, then cut west down into the Pétrusse valley via the stairs at Boulevard Roosevelt. Follow the Pétrusse park path east under the Passerelle and Adolphe bridges, past the greenery of the valley floor, then climb up to Place de la Constitution beside the Gëlle Fra monument. About 45 minutes with the descent and climb.

Gare Centrale is the country's rail hub — direct trains to Trier (50 min), Brussels (3 hr), Metz (45 min), plus all Luxembourg regional lines. From Luxembourg Airport, bus 16 reaches the station in about 25 minutes and is free, part of the country's fare-free public transport since 2020. Tram T1 leaves from directly outside the station, reaching Hamilius (old town) in 8 minutes and Kirchberg in 22 minutes, also free. Inside Gare, everything is walkable within 10 minutes; Vel'oh bike-share docks sit outside the station forecourt for the roughly 15-minute pedal to Kirchberg. Taxis queue on Place de la Gare around the clock for late arrivals.
