Who it suits
Pfaffenthal sits north of Grund in a bend of the Alzette, dominated by the arches of the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte overhead. It suits travellers who want quiet nights, a taste of village Luxembourg, and easy access to both Ville Haute (via the Pfaffenthal Lift) and Kirchberg (via the funicular at Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station). Cyclists using the national bike network also base here.
It doesn’t suit anyone wanting nightlife or shops on their doorstep — the neighbourhood is residential, with only a handful of cafes. It also feels remote after 10pm when foot traffic thins out.
Price and connections
Options are limited: mostly guesthouses and B&Bs at 110-160 EUR, making Pfaffenthal one of the better-value addresses inside the city walls. It's typically 50-80 EUR cheaper than Ville Haute for a similar central-ish location.
Walkable: the Vauban towers, the Pfaffenthal Lift viewing platform, the funicular up to Kirchberg (three-minute ride), the Alzette riverside path to Grund (12 minutes), and the National Museum of Military History satellite exhibits. Ville Haute is a two-minute lift ride, then straight into the Bock casemates.
