Day trips from Luxembourg: Trier, Metz and Bastogne ranked

Trier (Germany) — the must

50 minutes by train from Luxembourg (about €10 return, one of the few paid legs on the network). Trier is Germany\'s oldest city, with the Porta Nigra Roman gate, an amphitheatre, Karl Marx\'s birthplace, and the best Wurst-and-Riesling lunch scene within reach. Allow a full day. Start early — the last easy train back is 9:30pm.

Metz (France) — worth it

1 hour by train, around €16 return. Metz\'s cathedral is one of France\'s great Gothic buildings, with stained glass by Chagall. The Centre Pompidou-Metz museum (€13) is a serious contemporary art draw. Old town is compact and walkable. Best for architecture and museum days.

Bastogne (Belgium) — niche

1 hour by car, no direct train. Bastogne matters for one thing: the Battle of the Bulge. The Bastogne War Museum (€16) is genuinely excellent, and the Mardasson Memorial is moving. Skip unless you have a specific WWII interest — the town itself is functional rather than pretty.
