Day 1: The capital, kid-friendly
Morning at the Bock Casemates — the tunnels are the closest thing to a real dungeon in the country and kids love them (8 euros, under-4s free). Then the free Pfaffenthal panoramic lift for the vertical thrill and a picnic in the valley below. Lunch at the food trucks that park at Pfaffenthal on weekends or a proper meal at Kamakura's more casual sister spots in Grund.
Afternoon at the Natur Musée (Musée National d’Histoire Naturelle) on Rue Münster in Grund — 5 euros, hands-on, dinosaurs and Luxembourg wildlife. The neighbouring Neumünster Abbey courtyards are safe for running around. Sleep central, ideally with a family room at Novotel Kirchberg or Ibis Gare.
Day 2: Vianden with the chairlift
Train to Ettelbruck then bus 570 to Vianden (about 90 minutes total, free). Vianden Castle has enough dungeons, spiral stairs and armour to hold a seven-year-old for two hours (10 euros, under-6s free). The real hit is the chairlift up the opposite hillside — single-seat open-air chairs, running April to October, 5.50 euros return.
Lunch back in town, then either the Victor Hugo house (short, quiet, best for older kids) or the small Vianden Historical Museum. Ice cream at one of the Grand-Rue cafés and train back.
Alternative day-trips with children
Parc Merveilleux in Bettembourg (16 euros adult, 13 euros child) is a small fairy-tale-and-animals park, easy 30 minutes from the capital by train and bus. Mondorf-les-Bains has a domaine thermal with a family pool. And the Train 1900 steam railway at Fond-de-Gras runs Sunday afternoons May to September — a solid two hours of narrow-gauge nostalgia.
Questions, answered
Are strollers manageable in the Old Town?
Mostly yes on the main streets, but Grund and the Wenzel walk involve steps and steep cobbles. The Pfaffenthal and Grund elevators are free and stroller-friendly — use them rather than fighting the hills.
Is public transport really free for families?
Yes, including children and visitors. No tickets, no zones. The only paid transport is the Vianden chairlift, the panoramic lifts' upgrade views, and taxis.
