Schueberfouer: Luxembourg's late-August funfair

What it is and when

The Schueberfouer has run since 1340 — it's one of the oldest funfairs in Europe. It fills the Glacis field on the northern edge of Limpertsberg (a 10-minute walk from Ville Haute) with about 200 rides and stalls for roughly 20 days starting on the last Friday of August. Opening night has a shepherd parade through the old town in the afternoon. Closing weekend has fireworks.

It runs 15:00-01:00 most days, later on Fridays and Saturdays. Entry is free; you pay per ride. The food is the real reason to go: Gromperekichelcher (potato fritters), fried Moselle fish, mussels in white wine, and Bouneschlupp (bean soup) — old-fashioned Luxembourg cooking you don’t find in many restaurants anymore. Expect a €25-€35 dinner-and-drinks bill without rides.

Sleeping during Schueberfouer

Prices don’t spike as dramatically as National Day because the fair runs long enough that demand spreads out. Weekends are tighter than weekdays. A Ville Haute four-star runs €200-€240 on a Saturday during the fair, versus €160 midweek. Kirchberg stays cheaper (€130-€170) and the tram gets you to Glacis in under 15 minutes.

Avoid a hotel directly on Avenue de la Faïencerie unless you don’t mind noise until 01:00 — the fair generates real crowds walking home. Limpertsberg guesthouses a few streets back are quieter. The fair overlaps with the return of business travel to Kirchberg from early September, so if you want the cheapest Kirchberg rates aim for the last week of August rather than the first two weeks of September.
