Luxembourg school holidays: when families fill the hotels

Luxembourg schools follow six break periods that shape domestic and cross-border tourism. All Saints' break (roughly 25 October to 2 November), Christmas (23 December to 4 January), Carnival (mid-February, one week), Easter (two weeks including Easter itself), Whit/Pentecost (one week in late May), and summer (16 July to 14 September). Belgian, French and German school breaks overlap or differ, and all three drive weekend traffic here.

The city itself doesn’t feel much busier during Luxembourg school holidays — families tend to travel out rather than in. Where you feel it is in the Mullerthal (Berdorf, Beaufort, Echternach), Vianden and Clervaux, where family hotels and guesthouses fill and rates jump. If you’re planning a Mullerthal hiking base, avoid the first week of Easter break and the first two weeks of August.

Cross-border overlaps to know

French and Belgian school holidays hit Luxembourg harder than local ones because they bring day-trippers and short-stay bookings. The French Toussaint (early November) and Belgian autumn break both fill Vianden and the Mullerthal. February Carnival breaks — French, Belgian and German — stagger across three weeks and push weekend family-hotel prices in Luxembourg City up by €40-€60. Easter is universal and the tightest.

Summer is the most fragmented. Belgian summer runs July-August, French mid-July through late August, German breaks stagger by state from late June to mid-September. The net effect is that mid-August is the single busiest stretch for Mullerthal and Moselle accommodation. Luxembourg City itself, oddly, is quieter in August because business travel has stopped and locals are away — a real value window for the capital if not for the countryside.
