Day 1: The capital, slowly
Follow a compressed version of the one-day loop but give it room. 09:30 casemates, 11:00 Corniche walk, 12:30 lunch in Grund at Bosso or Am Tiirmschen. Afternoon in the Musée National d’Archéologie on Marché-aux-Poissons (7 euros, closed Mondays) — the Roman mosaics from Vichten are genuinely worth 90 minutes.
At 17:00 take the panoramic lift down to Pfaffenthal and walk the Wenzel path along the old ramparts. Dinner at Um Dierfgen in Ville Haute for judd mat gaardebounen, the national dish of smoked collar of pork with broad beans, around 22 euros.
Day 2: Vianden by train and bus
Leave the capital at 08:47 on the northbound train to Ettelbruck (35 minutes), then bus 570 to Vianden (25 minutes). You’re at the castle gate by 10:30. Vianden Castle is 10 euros and needs two hours; ride the chairlift up (5.50 euros return, April to October) for the postcard shot back down at the castle.
Lunch on Grand-Rue at Auberge Aal Veinen for wood-fired grills, then the Victor Hugo house museum (closed Mondays, 4 euros) — he lived here in exile in 1871. Last practical train back gets you to the capital by 19:30.
Where to sleep both nights
Stay in the capital both nights rather than moving bags. Ville Haute puts you at the sights but costs 180-260 euros; the Gare district around Place de Paris and Rue Joseph Junck is 90-140 euros for the same chains you know, ten minutes on foot from the Old Town via Passerelle bridge. Kirchberg's Sofitel and Meliá are business-park quiet on weekends and often the cheapest four-stars in the city.

Can I do Vianden as a half-day?
Not really. The train and bus combination is 60 minutes each way, and the castle alone deserves two hours. Budget the full day and you’ll enjoy it.
Is the Vianden chairlift running year-round?
No. It operates roughly Easter through October, weather dependent. In winter you walk up from town — about 15 minutes on a paved path.
