Luxembourg in September: the wine harvest month

September is my second-favourite month after May. Highs of 18-22°C, cool nights around 11-13°C, and the summer heat gone. Daylight is still generous — sunset around 20:00 at month start, 19:00 by month end. Business travel returns to Kirchberg from about 5 September, which lifts weekday rates back toward €200 on the plateau, but weekends stay reasonable at €150-€180 across most of the city.

The city itself is at its best: locals are back from holidays, café terraces in Place d’Armes and Place Guillaume II are still in full swing, and Schueberfouer runs through the first half of the month. By late September you can feel autumn arriving in the Pétrusse valley — the plane trees start turning.

Moselle harvest and wine festivals

The Moselle harvest (Traubenlese) typically runs mid-September to mid-October. Along the 42 km wine route from Schengen through Remich, Wormeldange and Grevenmacher, small producers press Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc and Auxerrois. Most cellars offer tastings by appointment; walk-in tastings are easier at cooperatives like Domaines Vinsmoselle in Wormeldange or Bernard-Massard in Grevenmacher.

Remich hosts its Fest vum Federwäissen (young wine festival) in mid-September, when the still-fermenting Federweißer is served alongside onion tart. Grevenmacher has a wine parade the second weekend of September with floats and free tastings. The 450 bus from Luxembourg City to Remich takes 40 minutes and is free like all Luxembourg public transport.
