What reopens for Easter

Easter is the calendar hinge for tourism in Luxembourg. The Bock casemates and Pétrusse casemates both reopen for the season (typically Good Friday or the Saturday before), the Vianden Castle chairlift starts running again, and Moselle wineries begin offering weekend tastings. The Petit Train touristique from Place de la Constitution also resumes. If you couldn’t come in winter because too much was shut, this is when the city fully wakes up.

Rates jump accordingly. Ville Haute doubles that ran €140 in mid-March hit €200-€240 over the four-day weekend. Kirchberg is cheaper because business travellers are gone — a good bet if you don’t mind the tram ride in. Book at least six weeks ahead for Easter Saturday and Sunday nights, which are the tightest.

Émaischen on Easter Monday

Émaischen is Luxembourg's oldest folk festival, held every Easter Monday since the 14th century. Potters and craftspeople fill Place du Marché-aux-Poissons and the surrounding lanes in Ville Haute, and the signature purchase is the Péckvillchen — a small clay bird whistle. It runs from around 10:00 to 18:00 and gets genuinely crowded by early afternoon. Come before 11:00 if you want to browse without shoulder-to-shoulder crowds.

Weather at Easter is unpredictable. It can be 8°C and drizzly or 20°C and glorious — I’ve seen both in the same week. Trees are budding, tulips are up in the Pétrusse valley, and daylight runs 13-14 hours. Restaurants are mostly open but many close on Easter Sunday itself, so book Friday and Saturday dinners rather than Sunday.
