The Best Walking Route Through Luxembourg City

Start: Place de la Constitution to the Bock

Begin at the Gëlle Fra monument on Place de la Constitution — the golden lady is the country's WWI and WWII memorial. Walk east along Boulevard Roosevelt to the Pétrusse Casemates entrance (recently reopened after restoration, 8 euros; skip if you’re doing the Bock).

Continue up Rue Notre-Dame past the cathedral (free, ducal crypt worth five minutes) to Place Guillaume II and Place d’Armes. Cut through to the Grand Ducal Palace on Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes, then follow the road to its end at the Bock promontory — the birthplace of the city, founded by Count Siegfried in 963.

Middle: The Corniche and the Wenzel walk

From the Bock the Chemin de la Corniche runs 600 metres south along the top of the cliff — this is the balcony view of Grund and the Rham plateau. At Plateau du Saint-Esprit, take the free elevator down to Grund (or the panoramic lift to Pfaffenthal for the harder version).

In Grund, follow the Alzette upstream past the Neumünster Abbey (free to enter the courtyards; cultural centre with rotating exhibitions). Cross the river and pick up the marked Wenzel Walk — the 1994 heritage trail that traces the medieval ramparts back up through Pfaffenthal to Ville Haute.

Finish: Back up top

The Wenzel climbs past the Vauban towers and the Three Acorns fort — Bock, Beck and Obergrünewald bastions of the 17th-century French fortifications. You’ll emerge near the Bock again. Reward yourself with a coffee at Konrad Café on Rue du Nord or a beer on Place d’Armes. Total: 6 km, roughly 250 metres of climbing, three hours at a fair pace with photo stops.
