Before Christmas Eve: peak market season

The Winterlights markets run from around 22 November to 24 December, spread across Place d’Armes, Place de la Constitution and Place Guillaume II. The Ferris wheel at Place de la Constitution and the giant tree there are the photo spots. Ice rink at Place Guillaume II runs simultaneously. Weekends in mid-December (12-13 and 19-20) are the busiest, with rooms in Ville Haute at €220-€280 and central four-stars selling out two weeks ahead.

Weekdays in early December are much easier — €160-€200 for the same rooms, and the markets are properly walkable rather than packed. The markets close around 21:00 most days, later on Fridays and Saturdays. Mulled wine (Glühwäin) is the local staple, along with Gromperekichelcher and Träipen (blood sausage) at the food stalls.

24 December through New Year

The markets close on 24 December at around 18:00. From 25 December the city genuinely empties — most restaurants close for 3-4 days, shops shut on 25 and 26 December (both public holidays), and locals disappear to family homes. Museums close 24, 25 and 26 December; most reopen 27 December. Room rates crash: a hotel that charged €250 on 20 December lists at €130-€150 on 27 December.

That quiet week between Christmas and New Year is an underrated time to visit if you don’t mind fewer open restaurants — the city is peaceful, the fortifications walk beautifully in cold air (though the casemates are shut), and you can get into places that were booked out a week earlier. New Year's Eve itself has fireworks over the Pétrusse valley and pushes rates back up to €200+ for that one night.
