Clausen and Pfaffenthal: the lower valley guide

Two under-visited neighbourhoods below the cliffs, home to the Rives de Clausen nightlife strip and the country\'s youth hostel.

Pfaffenthal

Pfaffenthal is the valley neighbourhood directly below Ville Haute, reached by the free panoramic lift. It\'s residential, quiet, and holds Luxembourg\'s excellent HI-affiliated youth hostel (€39 for a dorm bed, €61 for a private double), plus the Vauban Towers museum. This is where budget travellers should base — you\'re 5 minutes from the Old Town via the lift, and rooms cost less than a Gare hotel.

Clausen and Rives de Clausen

A 15-minute walk east along the river gets you to Clausen — the birthplace of Robert Schuman (EU founding father, small museum on Rue Munster) and, more relevantly for most visitors, the Rives de Clausen. This is a converted brewery complex that\'s now the city\'s main nightlife strip: about 10 bars and restaurants including Big Beer Company, Ikki (Asian fusion), and the Melusina club. Thursday-Saturday it packs out until 3am.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Any hotels in Clausen itself?

Not really — a couple of B&Bs. Sleep in Ville Haute and walk down for dinner.

How do I get back up at 2am?

The panoramic lift closes at 1am. After that, taxi (€13 to Ville Haute) or a 15-minute uphill walk.
