The real castle stays

Château d’Urspelt near Clervaux is the closest thing to a fully restored castle hotel — 56 rooms across the château and its outbuildings, a good restaurant in the vaulted cellars, and enough grounds to actually walk. Hostellerie du Château Grand-Chef Mondorf is not a castle proper but a grand belle-époque manor tied to the thermal park. Château de Bourglinster runs weddings and events but takes overnight guests in a handful of rooms — book far ahead. Hôtel Le Château d’Urspelt sister property in the village is cheaper and honest about it.

Hôtel-Restaurant Belle-Vue in Vianden gives you the castle from your window rather than around you, which is arguably better — you get to look at Vianden Castle glowing at night. Hôtel Oranienburg in the same town has similar views for less money. Neither is a castle itself but both trade on proximity.

Who should book what

For a genuine "we slept in a castle" story, Urspelt is the answer. Rooms in the main château run €230-€340 in 2026, with breakfast included. It is remote — 90 minutes from Luxembourg City by car, and the nearest train is Clervaux with a 10-minute taxi. If you do not have a car, do not book it. For the castle view without the drive, base yourself in Vianden at Belle-Vue or Oranienburg and walk up to the castle in the morning.

Skip anything that markets itself as a "castle experience" but is actually a modern hotel next to a ruin — there are two or three of these and they disappoint. If the photos show a swimming pool and the castle in the same shot, it is marketing, not history.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Can you stay inside Vianden Castle itself?

No. The castle is a monument, not a hotel. The closest you get is a room at Belle-Vue or Auberge Aal Veinen 200 metres below it.

Is Urspelt worth the drive from the city?

For one night and a decent dinner, yes. For a base to explore Luxembourg, no — it is too far north for day trips to the capital or the Moselle.
