1. Mosconi in Grund, two Michelin stars, the country's most consistent fine-dining room and Italian at heart. Book three weeks out for weekends. 2. La Cristallerie inside Hôtel Le Place d’Armes on Place d’Armes, one Michelin star, French technique with a modern lean. 3. Um Plateau in Clausen, a bistro with more ambition than the setting suggests and one of the better wine lists in town.
The everyday (4-8)
4. Brasserie Guillaume on Place Guillaume II, oysters and steak frites at fair prices for what it is. 5. Am Tiirmschen in the old town for judd mat gaardebounen, bouneschlupp and the other Luxembourgish dishes you actually came to try. 6. Beim Renert in Belair, neighbourhood bistro that locals treat as a canteen. 7. Konrad Café in Ville Haute for the best lunch under 20 euros in the centre. 8. Chocolate House opposite the Grand Ducal Palace — touristy, yes, but the hot chocolate with a hand-dipped spoon is genuinely good and the terrace view is unbeatable.

Where do I try the national dish?
Judd mat gaardebounen (smoked collar of pork with broad beans) is on the menu year-round at Am Tiirmschen, Brasserie Guillaume and most traditional places. Bouneschlupp (green bean soup) is a lighter alternative.
How expensive are we talking?
Budget 25-35 euros for a bistro main, 60-90 for the one-star lunch menus, and 180-plus at Mosconi for the full experience. Coffee alone is 3.50 to 5 euros almost everywhere.
