Free tram passing through Kirchberg

The top five

1. Every tram, bus and train in the country. Public transport has been free nationwide since 2020 — this alone is worth planning around. 2. The Chemin de la Corniche and the Bock promontory: the two best views in the city cost nothing. 3. The Pfaffenthal panoramic lift, free 24/7, with a glass floor 71 metres above the valley. 4. The Wenzel and Vauban Walks, both signposted city trails through the fortifications. 5. Villa Vauban's park (the museum is paid, the walled garden isn’t) and the Petrusse valley park below the Adolphe Bridge.

The next five

6. Mudam's Wednesday evening free entry from 6 to 9pm. 7. Notre-Dame Cathedral, always free, including the crypt with the tombs of the grand ducal family. 8. The Grand Ducal Palace changing of the guard, twice hourly on the hour, mid-July to end of August. 9. National Day fireworks on 22 June — the whole city turns out on the Adolphe Bridge and the Petrusse. 10. Christmas markets on Place d’Armes and Place de la Constitution from late November — free to walk, and the ferris wheel at Place de la Constitution costs about six euros for one of the best views of the year.

Good to know

Questions, answered

Is transport genuinely free for tourists?

Yes. Second-class travel on all buses, trams and national trains is free for everyone, resident or not. First class and cross-border trains (to Trier, Metz, Brussels) still cost money.

Are museums ever free otherwise?

Mudam on Wednesday evenings, MNHA and MNHN on Thursday evenings from 5 to 8pm (check the current schedule), and Invitation aux Musées weekend in March when almost everything opens for free.
